How do I get the smell of dead decaying rat and fruit out of my kitchen?
After coming back from out-of-state visiting relatives for a month, I find that a rat has died and decayed in my kitchen. Really decayed. We’re talking a puddle of goo here, I’m not exaggerating. Some fruit I forgot about and accidentally left in the pantry also melted into a puddle of mold and fungus.
Anyway, after a week, and lots of lysol and comet, the kitchen still stinks.
I live in a small place; the kitchen is in a side Niche, with no windows and only one door, so I can’t really air it out.
Is there any way I can get rid of the smell?
I would wash the area with a solution of hot water and 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda, with 1 or 2 capfuls of bleach. The bleach will kill the germs you’re smelling but not seeing. Rinse it well. Do you have a fan you can put in the kitchen to blow air out the door? Also, you can put a bowl of baking soda in your kitchen to absorb some of the odor. Is it possible the rat had a friend that came with him and is now back in a cupboard somewhere? Not a pleasant thought, but have you checked your whole kitchen out well? Good luck!!
